National Smile Month returns once more

April 25, 2017

With May rapidly approaching, it’s time to look ahead, and to plan for this year’s National Smile Month. Running from 15th May until 15th June, National Smile Month aims to increase the nation’s awareness of oral health issues in a campaign led by the Oral Health Foundation.

There are three key pieces of advice that the Oral Health Foundation hope to promote through their campaign:

  • Teeth should be brushed twice a day: once just before bed at night, and on at least one other occasion during the day. You should use a fluoride toothpaste.
  • A reduction in sugary foods and drinks will be beneficial to your teeth.
  • Regular, routine dental check-ups are vital to maintaining your oral health: visit as often as they recommend.

In order to improve oral health outcomes for as many people as possible, the Oral Health Foundation are calling upon us all to get involved. Led by dental and healthcare professionals, there are numerous ways that organisations and individuals can take part in this year’s National Smile Month. In past years, over 4000 companies have expressed their interest in joining the campaign, and last year’s 40th birthday National Smile Month was particularly successful with even more interest and events taking place than ever before. This year’s event is sponsored by Oral-B, Wrigley’s Extra, POLO Sugar Free, Philips and Regenerate, and aims to reach as many schools, community groups and workplaces as possible.

So, what can you do to get involved? The first step is to register your interest. You will then receive your (free) registration pack, which will contain everything in it that you need to get started and begin planning. The pack has lots of information to help you plan an event, think about ways to fundraise, and lots of ideas for how you can raise the profile of oral health. The website has lots of further information that will support you in your quest to bring smiles to those around you. And whilst you’re planning what to do, why not join the social media campaign: share your #MySmileySelfie and let your followers know what to expect.

National Smile Month is a brilliant chance to raise awareness of oral health and the important of maintaining a good oral hygiene routine. It’s easy to take part, and there are lots of ways that you can get involved – big or small. Why not register your interest today and get thinking and planning what you might be able to do to support those around you to prioritise their oral health.
